I just finished a trip down memory lane, sifting through some old Christmas photos. Among them were some older photos (2002-2003) of my hand-made Christmas Town that I used to put under the tree each year. I say "used to," because I made a conscious decision to permanently dismantle my town. Five overly curious (and playful) cats and a hand-made village made of paper, card stock, and cardboard simply do not mix. After discovering this morning's freshly-made damages, I took it all out once and for all.
I'm sad to see it go, but it's been neglected over the years, and the damages just add up without any fixes. I remember when a badly damaged or outdated building would simply be recycled into a brand-new creation. Unfortunately, I haven't added anything new in the last 4-5 years. Rather than simply crushing them and tossing them into the trash can, I think I'll give them a proper funeral in the fireplace.
I know I'm gonna get a lot of guff from family and friends, as it was one of their favorite Christmas decorations, but it's time to move on. I did leave the train and monorail up, and I do plan on continuing to put up a village each year. But, I will be making a transition to the sturdier (and cat-proof) ceramic buildings like the ones made by Lemax and other companies.
